A Better Tomorrow

As you may know, the 80th regular session of the Texas Legislature ended last year on May 28th. During the 140 days of the session with your support I kept my promise to serve as your "Voice in Austin." There was much business to take care of for our community in the critical areas of public school finance, affordable health care for children and seniors, safe neighborhoods for our families and economic opportunity for our people.

During the legislative session I authored, joint authored, or amended twenty-five pieces of legislation that are meaningful to District 146 and the Great State of Texas. My session highlights included legislation creating the Office of the Ombudsman for the Texas Youth Commission, legislation requiring that truant students be returned to school campuses in lieu of jail, the creation of three management districts fostering economic development in the District, co-authoring legislation restoring 127,000 children to the Children's Health Insurance Plan, and work done to ensure that Texas Southern University remains an independent institution, not under the care of a conservator.

My focus for the rest of the year:

  • health issues encompassing HIV/AIDS
  • the ongoing crisis facing the children at the Texas Youth Commission
  • gubernatorial appointments
  • historically underutilized businesses (H.U.B.s)
  • making District 146 the premier community in the city of Houston.

I will also work on interim studies assigned to my committees, Government Reform and Licensing & Administrative Procedures. Please feel free to tell me your comments and concerns. Feel free to contact me in person, by telephone or by email at: Borris.Miles@house.state.tx.us

Again it’s an honor to serve you and I welcome your comments and suggestions. Together we can make tomorrow better today!

Sincerely,
